What is JavaScript and why it is important in 2023?

Posted on January 23, 2011

JavaScript is a powerful programming language that was created in 1995 for Netscape Navigator. Since then, it has been used by all modern web browsers to add functionality to websites and, more recently, web apps.

Since it was first made, JavaScript has grown into a very powerful language. It’s not just used on the web anymore; it’s now used almost everywhere, even in space.

This post will talk about where the JavaScript programming language came from, how it has changed, where it is currently, and where it is heading. Let’s not wait any longer and get right to the fun.

What is JavaScript?

JavaScript is a programming language that was made to keep up with how the internet changes. Since it was first made, its use and popularity have grown, and it is now used for more than just building websites. JavaScript is the most popular way to make interactive websites, so it is almost always used in this field.

Programming has grown from computer programming to programming NASA equipment with JavaScript. Since it was made, Node.js has also made it easier to use JavaScript for other things. Let’s look at some of these use cases in more depth below.

What is JavaScript used for?

Thanks to the creation of Node.js, JavaScript is used for everything in the modern world. No matter how you look at it, this technology makes robust software for companies worldwide. Also, companies like LinkedIn and Medium use it to create platforms for users to access their services.

JavaScript can be used to make different kinds of software, like games, computer programmes, web apps, and even blockchain technology. But JavaScript might be the most popular way to write code for the web. For instance, more than 125,000 jobs on LinkedIn are looking for people with JavaScript skills.

Now that we’ve talked about how JavaScript is used in the business world, let’s talk about its most common use, which is web development.

JavaScript for Web Development

The most common way to use JavaScript is to build websites, and it is one of the most robust tools a developer can have. Web developers use JavaScript to add interactivity and features that make the internet much more fun and interesting for users.

JavaScript is now used for a lot more than just front-end development, which is where it began. JavaScript has grown to include the back end of web development, so it can now be used across the full stack. This means that developers can now use the CRUD (Create, Read, Update, and Delete) methods on the front end of a website.

Also, W3techs says that more than 90% of all websites use JavaScript. This makes it the most well-known leader in technology for building websites. Let’s look at some more specific ways that web developers use JavaScript.

Front-End Interactivity: JavaScript’s increased interactivity and features improve web development.

Web applications: are like websites, but they are put into a neat little box, which gives you more control over security and other things.

Browser Games: The modern web browser has come a long way, and now developers can make games that work well in a browser.

Back End Web Development: Web development has come a long way, and now JavaScript is so powerful that it can be used to manage the back end of websites and web apps.

Here are all the possible use cases of JS today

  • Web Applications
  • Web Development
  • Mobile Applications
  • Games Development
  • Presentation and slideshows
  • Server Application
  • Web Servers
  • Display data and time
  • Client-side validation
  • Display popup windows and dialogue boxes
  • Animate elements
  • Dynamic drop-down menus

Now we’ve covered all the uses of JavaScript; we can go on to discuss the language itself and how JavaScript works.

How does JavaScript work?

JavaScript is a client-side scripting language, meaning it works on the user’s browser and not on a device outside of the browser. MySQL is a language that runs on the server and handles all database requests. It is not a client-side language.

JavaScript also doesn’t need anything to be downloaded to the user’s device because the software it needs is already built into most modern browsers. Because of this, JavaScript is much easier to use than other languages.

Now that you know more about how JavaScript works, we can discuss how to use it on a website.

How to add JavaScript to your website?

It’s easy to add JavaScript to your website; link your JavaScript files from your HTML files. If you’ve ever worked with HTML and CSS to build a website, you’ve already done something similar.

A tag in HTML called “script” lets you link to JavaScript files so your code can change your website’s HTML and CSS. This is similar to adding CSS to your HTML. Let’s look at the HTML script tag to see what it looks like. The script tag and its syntax are shown in the line of code below.

 <script src=”yourFile.js”></script>

The line above links a file called “yourFile.js” (which is a terrible name, but it works as an example) to your HTML file. This lets you write your code in a separate file, which keeps your HTML clean and makes it easier to work with. Most people agree that using the script with the src attribute is the best way to do things because it keeps your code separate, making it easier to update and change as needed with few problems.

The script tag with src isn’t the only way to add JavaScript to your site, but let’s look at it another way. You can also put JavaScript code right into your HTML with the script tag. So next, let’s look at that.

 <script type=”text/JavaScript”>JavaScript code goes here</script>

It is simple enough to complete and doesn’t look much different from adding JavaScript externally.

Important note: Because the browser handles JavaScript, it is essential to remember that not all browsers will support all JavaScript features. Also, not all browsers will even have JavaScript turned on, so make sure to account for that.

Now that you know how to add JavaScript to a website, look at the JS Libraries.

JavaScript Libraries

There are a number of JavaScript libraries out there that can help you code faster and more clearly. Libraries help you keep your code clean and speed up and improve how well you can write code. But because of this, the syntax changes often, so each library has a learning curve.

Let’s look at some examples of libraries that you can use in your workflow.

Jquery JavaScript Library

Because Jquery has been around for a long time and is easy to use, it is the library of choice for JavaScript programming. It also makes the programming language more efficient and adds even more features by building on its new features. But first, let’s look at how the syntax differs from how JavaScript is usually written.

$(‘#overlay’).on( “click“, ‘#prev’, function(){

   if (currIdx < 0) {

      currIdx = 11;

This example looks like it has a lot going on, but let’s focus on just one thing: the function of code.

$(‘#overlay’).on( “click“, ‘#prev’,function(){}

This code works with JQuery, but if you didn’t include the JQuery library, you’d get an error if you tried to use it with regular JS. This code also has two things that are worth pointing out. The first is the $ selector, a shorthand way to target HTML objects. And the.on() method is an event listener that watches the browser window for a “click.”

React is the name of a well-known library. Let’s talk about what React is and how it’s different from regular JS.

React JavaScript Library

The React library is a popular library that was made to make it easier to create web apps. It is strong and has many open-source contributors who work on it, test it, and keep it up to date. It works differently than most libraries and is more complicated, but to be clear, let’s look at the syntax.

class ShoppingList extends React.Component {

   render() {

      return (

         <div classname=”shopping-list”>

            <h1>Shopping List for {}</h1>

As you can see, this is very different from regular JavaScript code or even Jquery. In React, you declare your HTML in your JavaScript, and it gets rendered after the code runs. This is different from how most websites are made.

There are a lot of other libraries and frameworks you can use in your workflow, and each has its syntax, features, and level of flexibility. To choose the best one for you, you should do some research on these things and think about them carefully.
